Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Nicotine Bees, the movie, gets to the truth about why the honey bees of the world are in big trouble, and why our food supply is in trouble with them. We think the answers are clear - and have been for several years. We filmed on 3 continents to find out the real reasons why bees are in catastrophic decline - and why many people don't want the real story to be told. Although the bees have been in a slow decline for years, something else happened between 2005 and 2006 that changed everything: a sharp and catastrophic collapse of bee colonies in dozens of countries simultaneously. This was unlike anything seen before, even by the oldest beekeepers in the U.S., Canada and Europe. The answers have been right in front of us: the worldwide, simultaneous die-offs of honeybees - with a strange set of behaviors seen everywhere. With the continuing bee collapse, one third of our food supply is at risk - yet despite the clear-cut scientific data, especially from Europe, in news reports this is issue is still called "mysterious." We think this crisis is not mysterious. The answers are clear cut from evidence from Europe and the US, from observations of similar effects from Europe to Canada to India, and in dozens of states across the US. We systematically ruled-out the other possible causes of this massive die-off to find the one underlying explanation that really works: all over the world, at the same time, with the same bizarre behaviors: bees simply leave their precious honey and young bees behind. They don't come home. We think we know why, and Nicotine Bees is ready to show what has happened.

Whether your are familiar with the honey bees are not, this is an issue that affects all of and this is a great video that explains the honey bees and the health issues we face together. Well worth the price !

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and educational   January 25, 2010

Nicotine Bees is a fascinating education about the challenges bees and beekeepers are having with chemicals in the environment. I appreciated the stories told by long-time beekeepers about their observations of bee behaviors--especially after the introduction of new chemicals. It goes to show that industry studies cannot be trusted, and that real field experience must be counted heavily when chemicals and genetic engineering are being OK'd by USDA, FDA, etc. I highly recommend this DVD for personal viewing and/or showing to the general public. Eye-opening.

5 out of 5 stars So long, food security!   January 11, 2010

I got this dvd today and watched it all with fascination! So many of our foods are dependent on the lowly honeybee. Without the respect it deserves the honeybee may soon no longer be there to pollinate our fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Goodbye almonds, cucumbers, soybeans, watermelon, raspberries, blueberries, walnuts, etc. Essentially this dvd shows that CCD or Colony Collapse Disorder is connected with the universal use of the current generation of insecticides-neonicotinoids. In CCD the worker bees fly off and leave the queen and brood to fend for themselves. The hive dies. The new insecticides act directly on the nervous system of insects which, for the honeybee means that they either die or cannot return to the hive. They 'forget' where the hive is. I found it very interesting when the movie begins to describe the difficulty of getting a product(the insecticide) declared a danger to the environment. Does the Environmental Protection Agency protect us? Interestingly, David Hackenberg, a beekeeper who appears in this dvd appears to have closed down his website. I hope that he has not gone out of business. So much for government(the EPA) protecting the little guy(us and the honey bees)!

5 out of 5 stars Nicotine Bees is the new Silent Spring!   December 6, 2009

Nicotine Bees is the new Silent Spring! This fact-based documentary includes an interview with an independent scientist who has no affiliation with agribusiness-supported universities or regulatory agencies. The message of this interview is compelling. Considering that one out of every three bites of food we eat is because of the work of honeybees and considering that the loss of the honeybee population is significant, this is a must-see documentary. It belongs in every library and school!
